“Bahay Kubo, Kahit Munti” |
|
The over-all purpose of the Brokenshire Resort & Convention Center is becoming a venue for social, educational, cultural, physical, and spiritual undertakings.
On October 19, 2009 led by Davao City Tourism Officer Mr. Rizal Giovanni Aportadera and UCCP Conference Minister Rev.Ariel Baladjay the BRCC dedicated its Bahay Kubo to showcase the rich, diverse Philippine cultural heritage. The Bahay Kubo, considered the native house of the Philippines and symbol of national shelter is made up mainly of bamboo. The entrance posts are painted with Davao’s marks of the Philippine eagle, the exotic durian, waling-waling orchid and indigenous tribes. On the ceiling are pictures depicting the Filipino culture of bayanihan or communal spirit as well as Filipino dances, festivals and images of indigenous people. All over the bulwagan or hall are native decors and furnishings distinctively Filipino plus a calesa mounted beside the entrance.
The inauguration of the Bahay Kubo coincides with the Indigenous People’s Month observance in the UCCP liturgical calendar. The extensive use of bamboo in this pre-Hispanic architecture hopes to educate the Brokenshire community and the resort clientele how bamboo helps deter impacts of climate change and prevents erosion in already devastated Philippine environment. Also, to impress to everyone the resilience of the bamboo and the Bahay Kubo as a whole to typhoons, floods, and earthquakes which are common in the Philippines. Juan Olado - Right most The BRCC Bahay Kubo is named Olado Bahay Kubo to recognize the sidekick of the late Dr. Herbert C. Brokenshire – the longest serving administrator in whose memorial Brokenshire Hospital is named. Juan Olado represents the past and present mission workers, oftentimes unappreciated and unrecognized yet contribute to the success of an institution. The naming of the Olado Bahay Kubo is a modest reminder to Brokenshirians and all that while leadership matters, membership matters, too. Thus, the success of an institution is not only a story of superiors – it is also a story of subordinates; It is not only a story of administrators – it is also a story of ordinary mission workers. Indeed this structure is an imprint of identity and partnership. It can have the characteristics of beauty and bounty despite its being bahay kubo kahit munti. The Olado Bahay Kubo is strategically built at the center of the two hectares Brokenshire Resort and Convention Center. It is open for family functions like wedding receptions and corporate events as well as educational tours. |
